Fun Fact Friday: the impact of bike specific infra Fun Fact Friday: the impact of bike specific infrastructure. The greater Victoria area on the south eastern point of Vancouver Island is a geographically small area. In combination of the fact that Victoria rarely sees snowy weather, the short distances between destinations and terrible traffic, cycling is often seen as a viable alternative to driving. In fact depending on where I have to go within Victoria it is often just as fast to ride my bike or no more than 10 minutes slower. With increasing infrastructure such as multiple bike lanes, bikes specific paths, bike commuting highways with very few stops, separated bike lanes, and incentives to ride a bike rather than drive a car, Victoria has a very heavy community cycling presence. How big? With a population of around 100,000 so far this year the bike paths have seen a total of 3.6 million counts across 11 locations. With high traffic areas seeing almost 5000 bikes a day.
