With the IOC’s decision to postpone the Olympic Games, I’ve also come to terms with the idea that the dream is still alive, it’s now just further down the road. I feel deeply for those who have been impacted heavily by this pandemic, and I completely support the decision to postpone. I was going to ramble on about rain gardens, bio swales and other water resources things I had seen this week but it’ll have to wait. This week’s Fun Fact Friday is brought to you by recent Ontario Veterinary College grad @nicolawenn. A hen (like a chicken 🐥 - cluck cluck), under the age of 1, is called a pullet. To reiterate, a teenaged female chicken is referred to as a Pullet. Who knew? I didn’t. Furthermore, the male equivalent term is ‘cockerel’. Instagram post 2269142258673888835_216370544 In lieu of all races being cancelled for the foreseeable future we might as well learn something about dams and how they relate to a Californian venue. Here is this week's Fun Fact Friday. Bonelli Park is a place for families, picnics, bike races and BBQs. The man made lake, the Puddingstone Reservoir, was built to help control flood waters in Northeast Los Angeles. The reservoir covers one square kilometer holding up to 25 million cubic meters of water. Different to last week's Fun Fact Friday about the Vail Lake Reservoir, where a concrete arch dam was used, the Puddingstone Reservoir uses an earth dam. An earth dam is as it sounds: piled up earth to hold back the lake. Now here's your fun fact: earth dams leak. Actually, all dams leak a little. There is a constant hydraulic pressure from the lake side that pushes water through the pores in the earth. The slope of the 'water table' as it descends from the high reservoir to the empty side, downstream of the dam is called the hydraulic gradient. Ultimately there is a tributary downstream of the dam were all this seepage collects. To calculate the rate of seepage you need to know the slope of the hydraulic gradient, the hydraulic head (height of the water surface relative to the receiving tributary) and the hydraulic conductivity constant of the medium. It’s a little more complex than that but those are the major elements needed. Instagram post 2264424124431746794_216370544 Fun Fact Friday: Let's start something new!⠀ I'm what I like to call 'forever curious' and when travelling, am always looking for fun and interesting facts about the places I visit. I'm now looking forward to sharing some of these facts with you on a weekly basis. Some tidbits may be random cocktail facts, while others, like this one, will be geographically motivated. This week we are in Temecula, CA for the 1st US Cup at Vail Lake. As a Water Resources Engineer, this location's fun fact about the Vail Lake Dam and water conservation stood out to me especially.⠀ ⠀ In 1948 the owners of Vail Ranch (the 2nd largest ranch in California est. 1904 by Wilson Vail) constructed a 40m high dam to create Vail Lake. Vail Lake currently holds 22.5 million cubic meters of water but has capacity to hold 63 million. The lake is surface water fed from three different tributaries: Wilson, Temecula and Kolb creeks. The purpose of the dam and associated lake is to help with groundwater recharge for the Temecula area. The effects of the extreme droughts a few years ago are still being felt and are apparent with the current low levels in the reservoir. It will take many years to replenish the reservoir and many more years to recharge the groundwater and aquifers that Temecula relies on. However, I feel it is important to also mention that Temecula relies on 60% of it's water to be pumped in from the Colorado River (500 miles away) and the remaining 40% from groundwater. Therefore it is clear the demand for water is great and unsustainable to pull from groundwater sources alone.
